Everyone Loves Wildlife

Dear Neighbor,

All of us have enjoyed watching wildlife, whether from a car or from a bike, or on a hike, even in our own backyards.  "Everyone loves wildlife" was a slogan written by Terry Krueger in the Spring Newsletter of the American Assoc. of Wildlife Veterinarians.  He was commenting on how only some of us have chosen careers or has made certain choices in our adulthood while still holding onto our passions about wildlife from our youths.  Dwight and Darlene Uhter of Paws Critter Crossing, a couple living in unincorporated South Cook County, Illinois are among a handful of volunteers who have devoted a lifetime in the caring, healing and moving of our local wildlife.

The Uhters have spent their lives working and raising families like most of us.  However, unlike most of us, they have also put unbelievable amounts of time, energy, and money into handling, raising and relocating the local wildlife we all love.  Rehabilitators like Dwight Uhter are licensed and registered by state and federal government, but have no source of funding except for the occasional donation.  Dwight has spent years working, bartering and collecting scrap metal to help pay for the cost of insurance as well as food, housing and medicine for the hundreds of orphans or injured wildlife his human family has cared for.

Dwight Uhter has hung onto his dream of continuing the rescue and release of a variety of animals, but this will be his last year unless the community decides they do not want the Dwight Uhters of this world to give up or quit.  Who will take those baby raccoons that fell out of the tree that just got cut down?  Who will look after the baby squirrels whose mom got his by the car? Who will take care of the baby deer whose mom just got caught up in the barbed wire fence?  Who will take care of the baby bunnies whom just lost their nest to the lawn mower?  Who will take care of the baby ducks whose home has now been replaced by a garage?

The state and county agencies depend on volunteers to save the lives of wildlife, but as everything in life, we need money to help sustain his dream and our responsibility.  Dwight Uhter currently has a few volunteers who have decided to devote much of their summer cleaning and taking care of his current animal family, as well as raising funds so that he may be able to continue Paws Critter Crossing and share his life-long knowledge with the next generation.

Whose responsibility is it?  Who will pay for it?  Who Cares?  We hope that you do.  Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated.  You are more than welcome to stop by, and see what your dollars are doing.
